GREAT FALLS – Authorities say one person was killed when a plane carrying four people crashed about 30 miles southeast of Great Falls.

The Great Falls Tribune reports Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards confirmed the death and said others on the plane had been hospitalized after the crash Tuesday afternoon.

Edwards didn’t know how many were people were hospitalized or how serious their injuries were.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer (KEN’-iht-zur) confirmed four people were on board. He didn’t know what type of plane it was.

The plane crashed near the Showdown Ski Area in the Little Belt Mountains. Edwards says a survivor apparently reached U.S. 89 nearby and summoned help.

The sheriff’s department, the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
