Troy Man Killed in Crash with Train

Truck was apparently stuck on the rails, according to Montana Highway Patrol

By Molly Priddy

A 66-year-old Troy man was killed on Sept. 26 after an eastbound BNSF train hit the pickup truck he was driving.

The crash occurred at about 9:12 p.m., when Donald Hawkins had apparently driven off the east edge of the railroad crossing and was stuck on the rails, according to Montana Highway Patrol.

He also apparently did not abandon the truck as the train approached, and after a severe collision with the train, the truck burst into flames and was consumed by fire.

Hawkins lived on Hunts Mill Road on the north side of the rail line. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
