Fire Burns at Somers Salvage Yard

Plumes of black smoke visible throughout the Flathead Valley

By Justin Franz

Firefighters from across the valley responded Friday afternoon to a massive blaze near Somers that spewed black plumes of smoke into the sky.

The pall of smoke was visible for miles as firefighters from Somers, Kalispell, South Kalispell, Bigfork, Evergreen and Smith Valley all responded to the fire.

According to law enforcement at the scene, the fire at A1 Salvage on Highway 82 near the north end of Flathead Lake started in the early afternoon.

Although the cause remains unknown, an officer said it appears a salvage yard employee had been burning brush earlier in the day and, though he extinguished the fire, it may have rekindled.

A thick black plume of smoke was emanating from a pile of used vehicles and tires, and at least one structure was threatened by the blaze.
