Smoke filled the Flathead Valley Sunday afternoon after a massive fire started at a landfill north of Kalispell.
According to a Flathead County Solid Waste employee at the scene, the fire started in a pile of appliances at about 2:45 p.m. What caused the blaze is unknown at this time.
Firefighters from Kalispell, South Kalispell, Whitefish, Evergreen, West Valley and Smith Valley all responded to the fire. Paramedics were also called to the scene as a precaution.
Smoke from the fire could be seen from Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Whitefish. Traffic on nearby U.S. Highway 93 slowed to a crawl as onlookers watched the blaze shoot smoke hundreds of feet into the air.
