Avery, Johnston Defend Titles at Junior Golf Championships

The top finishers qualified for the Junior America's Cup

Kalispell’s Teigan Avery and Libby’s Ryggs Johnston both defended their titles at the Montana State Junior Championship golf tournament in Polson on Wednesday.

Avery, the two-time reigning junior champ and two-time Class AA state champion out of Glacier, shot a 2-over 74 for a two-day score of 149, winning by six strokes in the 16-17 age division.

Hayden Flohr of Billings placed second after shooting a final round 76 for a two-day total of 155. Morgan O’Neil carded a 78 on Wednesday, placing third with 157. Whitefish’s Coral Schulz finished fourth after carding 80 to finish with a two-day total of 159.

The top four finishers qualified for the Junior America’s Cup team.

In the boys division, Johnston rallied back from second place after the first day to claim top honors in the 14-15 division. Johnston, who will be a freshman at Libby High School in the fall, carded a 3-under 69 on Wednesday to finish seven under par for two rounds, 137. He won by one stroke over Joey Moore of Billings, who shot 1-under 71 on Wednesday for a two-day total of 138. Caleb Stetzner of Anaconda finished tied for second.

Libby’s Jonny Cielak placed second in the 16-17 division with even par 144 after shooting 73 on Wednesday. Kalispell’s Ryan Keenan tied for third, 71-74—145.

The top four boys finishers qualified for the Junior America’s Cup team.

The boys will compete in Flagstaff, Arizona and the girls will compete in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Montana teams will compete against 18 other teams from the Western U.S., Canada, and Mexico.The Junior America’s Cup is July 26-30.

In addition, the top two competitors from the 15-, 16-, and 17-year-old divisions qualified for the Montana Alberta Cup. Boys qualifiers for the cup were Johnston, Moore, Stetzner, Cielak, Joseph Potkonjak and Schafer Paladichuk. The girls representing Montana in the Montana Alberta Cup will be Avery, Flohr, Katrina Babinecz, Tricia Joyce, Hannah Rosanova, and Kaelyn Volk. The Montana Alberta Cup is in Lethbridge, Alberta on Aug. 9-11.
