City Council Candidates File for 2015 Municipal Election

Six candidates vying for three seats in Columbia Falls, Whitefish

Six city council candidates in both Whitefish and Columbia Falls declared their candidacy for the municipal election in November.

The deadline to file for the upcoming election was July 2. Election day is Nov. 3.

Whitefish Mayor John Muhlfeld is running unopposed. Muhlfeld was elected to his first term in 2011.

Incumbent city councilors Frank Sweeney and Richard Hildner are seeking re-election in Whitefish. Sarah Lundstrum, Katherine Williams, Barton Slaney and John Repke are running for the three open seats as well.

Sarah Fitzgerald, who was appointed to the council last month to replace John Anderson, will serve through the end of the year but did not seek re-election.

The three candidates with the most votes will be elected to the council for four-year terms. The council is made up of six councilors and the mayor. Councilors do not receive a salary in Whitefish.

In Columbia Falls, incumbent councilors Darin Fisher and Doug Karper are seeking re-election. Councilor Julie Plevel is vacating her seat.

Other candidates to file include Erick Robbins, John H. Piper, Shawn Bates and Tyler Lee Furry.

The three candidates with the most votes will be elected to the council for four-year terms.

The Columbia Falls council is made up of six councilors and the mayor. Members are paid a salary of $200 per month.

There will be one contested race in Kalispell in Ward 3. Incumbent Rod Kuntz will contend against Christopher M.C. Cunningham and Karlene Osorio-Khor. Ward 1 incumbent Kari Gabriel is running unopposed, as well as Ward 2 incumbent Wayne Saverud and Ward 4 incumbent Phil Guiffrida.

There are four wards in Kalispell and two councilors from each ward elected to four-year terms. The city council is made up of eight councilors and the mayor. Councilors are paid a salary of $5,000 with a $900 stipend.
