HELENA — Authorities say two men were killed in a small plane crash in the Big Belt Mountains just northeast of Canyon Ferry Lake.
Broadwater County Undersheriff Wynn Meehan says the single-engine Cessna 172 left the Helena airport just after 10 p.m. Wednesday on its way to White Sulphur Springs. The plane crashed in Avalanche Gulch after one of its wings apparently hit a rocky outcropping.
Officials with the Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division told the Independent Record that a search began at about 6:15 a.m. Thursday, and the plane was found about two hours later.
Ground crews hiked into the site, and the National Transportation Safety Board plans to begin investigating Friday.
The names of the men involved in the crash have not been released. They were the only ones on board.
