HELENA — A cow that escaped her owner after a visit to the veterinarian ambled through Helena on Thursday afternoon, startling golfers and disrupting late afternoon traffic before disappearing west of town.

The owners of the brown cow, named Goofy, were unable to locate her Thursday evening.

Police say the cow escaped, along with three others, near Capital High School on Thursday afternoon. Three were quickly corralled, but Goofy made a break for the front nine of the Bill Roberts Golf Course. Course employees and Animal Control officers were unable to corral her.

She was pursued by people on golf carts through residential areas before she ended up on Euclid Avenue at about 4:30 p.m., causing some traffic concerns.

Police Sgt. Jayson Zander says the cow continued westbound out of the city.
