United Way Sponsors New Grocery Delivery Service

By Beacon Staff

The United Way is sponsoring a new grocery delivery service for low-income elderly and disabled people in Kalispell. Registered United Way volunteers will deliver groceries free of charge to eligible individuals.

Here’s the information from the United Way:

The Kalispell Home Bound Grocery Delivery Service will deliver groceries once a week to people within the Kalispell City Limits. The service is available to low-income private individuals who are unable to drive and shop for themselves, primarily the elderly and people who are either temporarily or permanently disabled.

“This program serves people who can’t get their groceries any other way,” said Sue Cummings, who along with JoAnne Blake started the program after Sykes’ grocery had to discontinue its grocery delivery service. “There are a number of people in the community who are elderly, who can’t drive, they have no family to help them out, no neighbors to do their grocery shopping for them, and this provides a way for them to get food.”

Groceries must be paid for by check or debit card number at the time of delivery. Orders can be called in on Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Orders will be filled on Friday mornings at Rosauer’s grocery store and will be delivered on Friday afternoons.

Rosauer’s manager Tom Sullivan said the delivery program is going smoothly and works well with the store’s delivery service that’s available for a small fee.
“The volunteers approached us and asked us to participate,” he said. “They explained their program and how they wanted it to work. We decided to give it a trial run and everything went fine. It’s simple and easy to process. The volunteers are very dedicated to what they’re doing and very well-organized.”

Cummings said the program currently has about 20 volunteers and can serve up to 30 people who need the service.

Volunteers who can take orders or delivery groceries are welcome. To volunteer, call JoAnne at 257-6230 or Sue at 756-6022. For more information on the Kalispell Home Bound Grocery Delivery Service, call 257-6230.
