Places: Alpine Slide and Zip Line Tours

By Beacon Staff

Whitefish Mountain Resort has two new additions to its summer activity list and both are built for speed: the Alpine Slide and the Zip Line Tours.

Grab a yellow sled and cruise approximately 1,600 linear feet below Chair 6 to the Base Lodge. Use the red handbrake to control your speed while flying down the 281 feet of vertical rise as the U-shaped track switchbacks through the trees. Think of a luge race, without the ice.

The slide is open to all ages. Children less than 48 inches tall can ride for free, but they must share a sled with an adult. If it’s raining, call to make sure the slide is open. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For those brave souls, strap into a paragliding-style harness and fly through the air suspended more than 100 feet off the ground on the Zip Line Tours.

The approximately two-hour tour, including orientation, consists of about four spans with short hikes between each. Built with side-by-side cables, you can brave speeds of 50 mph.

The Zip Line is open to all ages, but you must weigh between 60 and 250 pounds and be at last 54 inches tall.

How to get there:
From downtown Whitefish take Baker Avenue north over the train tracks. Baker Avenue becomes Wisconsin Avenue. Continue on Wisconsin. Turning right, take Big Mountain Road up the mountain.
