Courthouse Garden Produces Fresh Veggies for Food Bank

By Beacon Staff

Anyone who drives regularly past the old county courthouse buildings on the island on Main Street has probably watched the garden on the east side rapidly grow and produce, maybe wondering like I have where it was all going to go. Well, the food is being put to good use. The county extension program donated 30 pounds of produce this week to the Flathead Food Bank from the Kalispell courthouse garden. It was the first harvest of the season, and the group expects there will be much more donated in the next few weeks.

About 50 Flathead County residents completed a 12-week master gardening class earlier this year as part of a Flathead County Extension Office program. These “master gardeners” are now performing 20 hours of horticulture related community service in towns throughout the area, including the courthouse garden.
