Laid-Off Workers at Smurfit-Stone to Get Aid

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Workers losing their jobs at a Missoula-area mill are eligible for a federal job assistance program.

Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. will close its paper mill near Frenchtown at the end of the year, eliminating 417 manufacturing jobs in western Montana.

U.S. Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester say Smurfit-Stone employees can get help through the Trade Adjustment Assistance program.

The program provides tools and training so workers can find new jobs. It includes unemployment insurance, job search and relocation allowances and a health care tax credit.

Smurfit-Stone employees who need help should contact the Missoula Job Service Workforce Center in person or by calling (406) 728-7060.
