Flathead National Forest Awards Timber Contracts

By Beacon Staff

The Flathead National Forest has awarded contracts to two timber companies to salvage beetle-infested and hazard trees.

Forest officials say PaveCo of Kalispell will remove about 33,000 board feet of hazard trees from the Tally Lake Campground.

Johnson Brothers of Missoula will harvest approximately 73,000 tons, or about 12.8 million board feet, of timber from the Summit Mountain Pine Beetle Salvage Project on the Swan Lake District.

The sale is designated for winter harvest to reduce impacts on grizzly bears.

Swan Lake District Ranger Steve Brady says the forest made the project a priority because there is a limited time frame in which the beetle-infested trees are economically valuable.
