PLACES: Stumptown Ice Den

By Beacon Staff

When the weather outside is frightful and your skates are still aching to fly, head to the Stumptown Ice Den in Whitefish.

The rink offers ample opportunities for open skating under a protective pavilion roof on well-groomed ice. Rental skates are available at a low price making it an affordable outing for families of any size. Skate sharpening is also available.

For the serious skater, or those interested in playing hockey, the rink hosts adult drop-in hockey as well as private and group skating lessons, youth hockey, league hockey and is home to the Whitefish Figure Skating Club. Beginning Jan.9, take advantage of the numerous classes, including “Parent and Me” with mom or dad, “Snowplow Sam” and different levels of “Basic.”

For something a little different, grab a broom and hit the ice with your sliders. The rink has recently added curling to its schedule.

Don’t miss out on an all-day public skate on Dec. 31. For those interested in skating into the New Year, take advantage of the free public skate beginning at 9:15 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Schedule is subject to change, so for more information on leagues, figure skating or public skate times, contact the Stumptown Ice Den at (406) 863-2477.

How to get there: From downtown Whitefish, go north on Baker Avenue and take the bridge over the train tracks. Baker becomes Wisconsin Avenue. Turn right (east) on Denver Street. Take next left (north) on Colorado Avenue. The parking for Stumptown Ice Den is on the left.
