THE WINE SPY: Amalaya Red Wine 2007

By Beacon Staff

This well-balanced and easy to drink red wine is mainly composed of Argentina’s signature grape: Malbec. Depending on the year, it can be blended with two or three other red grape varietals. This wine has a brilliant and dense rudy color.

Layman’s Review: The aroma is very fruity with a touch of vanilla. Beautiful dark color and the taste is of red fruits with a some subtle spices. The tannin finish is soft and not overpowering.

Expert Review: The 2008 Colome Amalaya is chalk full of plum and currant aromas with a seductive and complex layering of tamari and warm Chinese five spice notes. Ripe and rich, yet not at all overdone, this incredible Argentina value bursts on the palate with dark fruit flavors balanced nicely with snappy anise and mineral notes on the lengthy finish.

Mendoza is capable of producing rich and rewarding Malbec, but can be hindered on the value end of the spectrum by over-blown, oaky glob monsters without much finesse or restraint in cheap winemaking tactics.
