MONTANA MARKET: Italian Sauce

By Beacon Staff

My friend Sal says there is nothing better than a good “sawce” (his Italian pronunciation) and he’s right. This recipe has all the making of a great Italian sauce that can be served over pasta or layered in lasagna. Serve with a great salad and some crusty Italian bread to your family or a group. You’ll receive rave reviews. The wine feature this week is a great pairing.

Ingredients:
3 pounds of lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
4 stalks of celery, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
28 oz can of diced tomatoes
18 oz can of tomato paste
24 oz can of tomato sauce
2 cups of water
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 ½ Tbsp chili powder
1 ½ tsp of salt
½ tsp of pepper
2 tsp of oregano
2 Tbsp parsley
2 Tbsp brown sugar
Juice of a fresh lemon
3 Tbsp Parmesan cheese, grated
8 oz fresh mushrooms

Directions:
Brown meat in large pot over medium-high heat. Add onions, celery, bell pepper and garlic to meat. When meat is done, drain off grease. Add remaining ingredients and simmer at least 2 hours.
