MSHA Fines Troy Mine Nearly $550K for 2007 Death

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration says the company that owns the Troy Mine has agreed to a settlement of nearly $550,000 for citations and penalties issued after a man was killed in a July 2007 cave-in.

An administrative law judge with the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission approved the settlement and ordered the company to make payments to MSHA beginning on Feb. 26.

The MSHA says the death of mine mechanic Mike Ivins brought to light seriously flawed ground control conditions at the mine.

MSHA reached the settlement with Genesis Inc., the wholly-owned subsidiary of Revett Minerals that owns the Troy Mine.

Revett President and CEO John Shanahan was out of the country and unavailable to comment.
