Kalispell’s Malby Wins Pro-Am With Course Record 61

By Beacon Staff

Ryan Malby has shot 63 a few times before, and even a 61, which is the course record at Village Greens Golf Club in Kalispell. But he said none of it compares to his July 7 masterpiece at the Canyon River Golf Pro-Am in Missoula.

Malby, the golf pro at Village Greens, set the Canyon River Golf Club course record with a 61 to win the tournament by six strokes. Don Waller came in second at 67 and several golfers were tied for third at 70. Malby’s score was 11-under par, with three eagles.

But Malby said it wasn’t just the score that was noteworthy, it was how he achieved the score. He didn’t have any shots that took a lucky bounce and then dropped in the cup. Instead, he played consistently brilliant golf, all day long on every hole.

“It was crazy,” he said. “It was just one of those days. It was just perfect golf. I didn’t hole anything in or chip anything in, it was just straight-up good golf.”

Malby has set various course records in his golfing career, but he said none were as rewarding as the July 7 round. Given the course at Canyon River Golf Club, and his start-to-finish consistency, he thinks he’ll have a tough time ever topping this performance .

“I’ve had a lot of good rounds, but this was by far the best,” Malby said. “I’ll probably never shoot like that again.”
