Fire Near Plains Burns 65 Acres

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – Lolo National Forest officials say an abandoned campfire sparked a blaze about 10 miles southwest of Plains.

The Seigel fire was reported at 4 p.m. Monday and had burned 65 acres in steep, rocky terrain by Tuesday afternoon. About 70 firefighters are on the scene. Three helicopters and two fire engines are working the fire while two airplanes were assigned Tuesday morning.

Forest spokeswoman Julie Molzahn says the campfire was abandoned in a camp about a mile up the Seigel Creek Road between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
