Youth Running Program Caps Off Season With Oct. 14 Race

By Beacon Staff

Cross country runners from Glacier and Flathead high schools participate in their final regular season meet of the year at the Glacier Invite on Oct. 14. The race begins at 3 p.m. at Kidsport Complex, but when the race is over and the high schoolers are departing, you may notice a bunch of small runners taking their place. That would be the Highlander Cross Country club, a youth running program also participating in its final race of the season.

Organized by coaches from Flathead High School and assisted by high school runners from Kalispell’s two high schools, Highlander Cross Country has been held Tuesdays and Thursdays since Sept. 7. Kids from kindergarten to eighth grade participate. The program’s goal is to get children interested in running as a healthy lifestyle and, possibly, a competitive option.

Highlander already held one evening of races in early September. This time around, there will be three races after the high school runners are finished, scheduled for 4:30, 4:45 and 5 p.m. at Kidsport Complex. Stop by to encourage these kids.
