Evaluation Ordered for Man Involved in Standoff

By Beacon Staff

A 36-year-old man who was arrested after a six-hour standoff at a Kalispell hotel in which he is accused of barricading himself in a bathroom with a 17-year-old boy has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation.

The Daily Inter Lake reports that Flathead District Court Judge Stewart Stadler on Thursday ordered the evaluation for Thomas Mulligan after Mulligan submitted a handwritten letter asking to represent himself and plead guilty to two felonies.

Mulligan in January pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and criminal endangerment stemming from his Dec. 31 arrest after a Kalispell SWAT team stormed his Super 8 motel room.

Mulligan says he wants to plead guilty to avoid or reduce his time in federal prison, which he says he fears.
