Places: Les Mason State Park

By Beacon Staff

Les Mason State Park, one of only three public access spots on Whitefish Lake, is an ideal spot for an afternoon of lounging next to the water.

The eight-acre park is set in a wooded area providing access to the cool, clear waters along a stretch of smooth cobble beach on the east shore of the lake. A large roped-off swimming area protects water-bound patrons from the lake traffic and a floating dock is easily reachable. No lifeguard is on duty, so be safe while practicing cannonballs from the dock.

A gentle, sloping paved trail from the parking area makes the park accessible for all ages and abilities and handicap parking is available. Or, use the series of steps that create a shortcut to the picnic area. With the easy access, the park is a great place to launch canoes and kayaks.

There are numerous shaded areas with picnic tables perfect for a quick retreat or a more organized family gathering. A toilet is available but potable water should be packed in. Dogs are allowed only in the designated area just south of the swimming and picnic areas.

The park is free for residents with Montana state license plates. Non-residents are asked to pay $5 per vehicle, $3 disable per vehicle and $3 walk-in, bicycle or non-commercial bus per person.

How to get there: From downtown Whitefish, travel north on Baker Avenue over the train tracks. Baker turns into Wisconsin Avenue and then East Lakeshore Drive. Continue past the turn to Whitefish Mountain Resort for about a mile and the turn is to the west. The turn is well marked with state park signs.
