PLACES: Museum at Central School

By Beacon Staff

If you’re looking for a way to get away from the cold, the Museum at Central School in Kalispell could provide the perfect relief.

Located near downtown, Central School was built in 1895 as an elementary and high school and used as such until the late 1960s, when it became home to Flathead Valley Community College. Since 1999 it has housed the museum and the Northwest Montana Historical Society’s collection.

Inside, visitors can find various exhibits featuring native tribes, early settlers, industries and communities of Northwest Montana. One section of the museum is an interactive history of the valley, including a replica of Flathead Lake, which people can explore through various lights and audio.

Also, this weekend the museum will host a lecture by Bill Weikel, who will discuss early surveying methods and techniques used in Montana. It’s the last of this year’s John White Lecture Series.

The Museum at Central School is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors. Members and children get in free. For more information, visit www.yourmuseum.org.

How to get there: The museum is located two blocks east of Main Street in Kalispell, at the intersection of First Street East and Second Avenue.
