FWP Reminds Public Not to Handle Young Wildlife

By Beacon Staff

Although it may seem like a helpful act wildlife officials are urging the public not to handle young animals like fawns.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks sent out a reminder recently about not picking up deer fawns or other wildlife, even if they appear sick or in need of help. A young animal that acquires human scent is more likely to be abandoned by its parent, FWP said in a release.

FWP receives several calls regarding deer fawns and other young wildlife during the spring and summer months. The public should not bring fawns into the local FWP office, as wildlife officials are not allowed to accept them.

It is illegal to possess and care for live animals taken from the wild, FWP said.

FWP is also reminding the public to keep dogs under control in the outdoors. This can prevent unnecessary attacks on deer, especially on vulnerable young. Dog owners can be issued a citation for allowing dogs to harass, chase or kill wildlife.
