Swan River Trail Takes Step Forward

By Beacon Staff

Flathead County submitted paperwork to pursue federal funding for a 1.5-mile trail along the Swan River near Bigfork.

The document – an agreement between the state and the county – requests nearly $260,000 in federal Community Transportation Enhancement Program (CTEP) funds for the $300,000 project.

The Bigfork Rotary Club is responsible for the remaining $40,000 local match, though if it fails to follow through the county will have to pay it.

The proposed trail would run from Lee Road – which is near Montana Highway 83 around Echo Lake Café and Swan River School – to Williams Lane. The Flathead County Planning Department said in previous meetings that it would like to keep it to the east side of Swan River Road because the Rotary Club has already completed some trail work on that side.
