$1 Million Bail Set for Man Accused in Fatal Polson Stabbing

By Beacon Staff

A judge has set $1 million bail for a Browning man accused of stabbing another man to death in Polson.

Deputy Lake County Attorney Jessica Cole-Hodgkinson detailed the attack for the first time in court documents filed Monday.

Prosecutors accuse 32-year-old Makueeyapee Whitford of stabbing John Pierre Jr. of Polson once through his upper sternum near the base of his neck.

The Missoulian reports the knife cut Pierre’s aorta and pulmonary artery and caused him to bleed to death internally.

Cole-Hodgkinson says the stabbing happened early Saturday at a party. Witnesses say Pierre came up to a vehicle outside the house and asked why they turned down the music.

Whitford then allegedly approached Pierre and struck him in the neck or upper chest.

Whitford is to be arraigned Wednesday.
