Fireworks Laws in Effect for Area Cities

Fireworks prohibited in Kalispell, Columbia Falls city limits

Fireworks and the Fourth of July go hand in hand, but local law enforcement are reminding residents to enjoy the colorful explosives only in the areas where they are allowed.

Fireworks are prohibited in the city limits of Kalispell and Columbia Falls, as well as on all national forest and state forest lands, wildlife management areas and fishing access sites.

In Whitefish’s city limits, fireworks are allowed July 3-4 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The city increased the fine for violations and anyone caught violating the ordinance can receive a $300 fine for the first offense and $500 for subsequent violations.

Police Chief Bill Dial is encouraging residents to abide by the law, and anyone with complaints should call 863-2420 and select option 2.

“We need the citizens to help us police our community,” Dial said.

Fireworks are allowed within the county. Kalispell Fire Chief Dave Dedman asked residents to take precaution if they do use fireworks in areas where they are allowed. Each year, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks, Dedman said.

Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks – devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.

“Please celebrate Independence Day responsibly and provide for safety first,” Dedman said.
