Voters to Decide Election Day Voter Registration

Voter registration deadline would move to the Friday before Election Day

HELENA — Montana voters will decide in November whether to end Election Day voter registration for future elections.

If the referendum passes, the voter registration deadline would move to the Friday before Election Day.

The Republican-led Legislature voted in 2013 to put the issue on this year’s ballot. Making it a referendum instead of a bill sidestepped a potential veto by Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock.

Those supporting the measure say having voters register at least two days before Election Day will protect against fraud and cut down long lines at the polls.

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch says more than 29,000 Montanans have registered and voted on Election Day since the law went into effect in 2006.

She says Election Day registration makes Montana’s voter laws among the strongest in the nation.
