UM Student Dies of Suicide in Dorm Room

The suicide was the second death involving a UM student in just over 12 hours

MISSOULA — Missoula County officials say a 19-year-old University of Montana student whose body was found in his dorm room died by suicide.

Undersheriff Jason Johnson tells the Missoulian the man suffocated himself in his room at Craig Hall.

Campus police were notified of the death at about 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Associated Press usually does not identify people who die by suicide.

The suicide was the second death involving a UM student in just over 12 hours.

The sheriff’s office says freshman Kole Swartz died at about 3 a.m. Sunday when a firearm he was handling discharged at a residence in Clinton. Swartz’s death has been ruled an accident.
