UM Professor’s Presentation on Islam to Continue

School board holds special meeting to discuss complaints about presentation

DARBY — The Darby School Board has decided to let a University of Montana professor give a school presentation on Islam despite complaints from the community.

The board held a special meeting Monday to discuss the presentation and chose to allow Professor Samir Batir to speak to a high school class as scheduled on Wednesday.

The meeting had been held in response to complaints and calls of opposition to the presentation. But a majority of those who spoke out at the meeting voiced their support for having the speaker.

Students with a permission slip signed by their parents will be able to attend the presentation.

Batir, an Arabic languages and cultures professor, uses literature, film and other resources to inform audiences about the heritage of Islamic civilizations and the religion of Islam.
