BOZEMAN — Montana university system leaders hope to persuade more high school graduates they can succeed in college.
The Montana Board of Regents says its Resident Student Access Initiative seeks to improve student scores on the ACT by offering free PreACT tests to high school sophomores. The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports the PreACT costs will be paid for with a federal grant.
Tyler Trevor, a deputy commissioner for higher education, said about 1,000 fewer students are graduating from high school each year and a smaller share of them are enrolling in Montana university system campuses. Several colleges are making cuts due to declining enrollment.
Trevor says the university system also plans to do a better job, starting this spring, of letting high school students know they can get financial aid for college.
