U.S. Officials Say Crow Tribe Can’t Account for $150,000 Grant

Funds were supposed to be used to combat meth addiction on the reservation

By Associated Press

BILLINGS — Federal officials say the Crow Tribe can’t account for $150,000 in federal funds that were supposed to be used to combat meth addiction on the reservation.

The Billings Gazette reported Monday the money was intended to be spent in the 2015 and 2016 fiscal years.

A report by Department of Interior’s Office of Inspector General recommended that the government either obtain receipts for the funds or ask the tribe for the money back.

The money was intended for a program that raises awareness about meth, for substance abuse education and to provide treatment referrals.

The newspaper reports that tribal Chairman Alvin Not Afraid didn’t respond to a phone message seeking comment. His spokesman, Jared Stewart, said he couldn’t immediately provide any information about the inspector general’s report.
