HELENA – Montana lawmakers have chosen a study of state and local tax policy as their top priority during the 18 months before the 2021 legislative session.

The 2019 Legislature passed 27 joint resolutions for interim legislative studies. The tax policy review received the highest ranking among the 88 lawmakers who responded to a survey asking them to rank the studies in order of importance.

Sixty-two legislators did not respond.

Other top issues include a study of whether the electrical transmission grid could withstand an electromagnetic pulse, terrorism or wildfire; whether the state Water Court will be needed after 2028; and issues regarding the Division of Child and Family Services.

The Legislative Council is scheduled to meet on May 29 to assign the studies to various committees.
