USPS Proposes Closing Four Montana Post Offices

By Beacon Staff

BILLINGS – The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing the post offices in Cardwell, Crane, Redstone and Shawmut as part of an effort to cut costs.

USPS West Area Region spokesman Al DeSarro tells The Billings Gazette that all four of the Montana offices being considered for closure are within eight to 13 miles of another office. There are 315 post offices statewide.

DeSarro says the agency is looking at closing 2,000 to 3,000 offices nationally to become more efficient. He says the agency is making an all-out effort to save every cent it can as it continues to lose money.

The possible closures come soon after USPS announced the closure of the Big Sky District office in Billings, displacing 40 employees. The USPS is also looking at consolidating sorting operations.
