Montana Officials Warn to Leave Fawns Untouched

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – State officials are warning people in the area of Montana’s Capitol that newborn deer must be left alone.

The state Department of Administration issued a memo saying that employees and visitors at the Capitol area in Helena should not disturb fawns.

Besides human handling being bad for the animals, the memo says, the mothers may become aggressive when trying to protect their young.

The message comes as Helena moves closer to killing about 50 deer as part of a pilot project intended to help control the population. It’s been estimated that 700 deer inhabit the city.
