Lottery-Winning Fugitive Faces Drug Charges in Flathad County

By Beacon Staff

A fugitive who claimed a state lottery prize this spring has been arrested and faces two felony drug charges in Flathead County.

In May, Robert Stayton received a $10,000 prize from the Montana Lottery despite the fact that he was wanted in three counties and apparently owed child support in another state.

Flathead County officials say Stayton was arrested in Lewis and Clark County last month and brought to Flathead County, where he also is charged with bail jumping.

Montana Lottery officials said in May that they aren’t required to check lottery winners for warrants or unpaid child support outside Montana.

Sheriff Chuck Curry says once Stayton’s charges are dealt with in Montana he will be extradited to Idaho, where he faces additional charges.
