Brandon McIver, a former prep golfer standout from Billings, shot a 3-under 69 to take the lead at the 97th annual State Amateur Golf Tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club Thursday.
McIver leads Kalispell’s Ryan Porch by one stroke. Porch shot a 2-under 70 in the opening round on the North Course. Jordy Donovan of Kremlin shot 71 and is in third place. Kalispell’s Jason Winkler sits tied for fourth after carding 72.
Action resumes Friday at the three-day tournament.
McIver, 20, will be a junior at the University of Oregon this fall. He competed at the U.S. Open earlier this summer. He won last year’s State Am tournament by eight strokes at Helena.
