Gold, McIver Win Beacon Pro-Scratch in Sudden-Death Playoff

Josh Gold and Brandon McIver edge Maury Povich and Lon Hinkle at seventh annual invitational

By Dillon Tabish

Josh Gold and Brandon McIver paired up to win the seventh annual Flathead Beacon Pro-Scratch Invitational Golf Tournament in dramatic fashion at Northern Pines Golf Club on Tuesday.

Gold, of Kalispell, and McIver, a Billings native who competes at the University of Oregon, birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff against Lon Hinkle and Maury Povich, edging out the victory.

Both teams carded two-day scores of 127. Hinkle and Povich finished with a tournament-best 10-under 62 on Tuesday. Gold and McIver carded 63 to tie Hinkle and Povich after 36 holes.

It was the latest impressive victory for McIver, who won the Montana State Men’s Amateur Tournament last weekend and competed at the U.S. Open earlier this summer.

The Beacon Pro-Scratch features many of the best professional and amateur golfers in Montana. This year’s tournament was one of the most competitive to date, with 12 teams shooting 133 or better after two rounds. Last year’s tournament had four teams at 133 or below.

The tournament opened at Eagle Bend on Monday.
