STEVENSVILLE – A Stevensville man who was reported missing after failing to return from an Aug. 26 woodcutting trip has been found dead in a steep, heavily timbered area east of Stevensville.
Ravalli County Sheriff/Coroner Chris Hoffman says the body of 56-year-old George Alex Baumann was recovered Saturday. The cause of death is still under investigation and his body has been taken to the state crime lab in Missoula.
The original search was suspended on Sept. 2 after Baumann was not located within a three-quarter mile radius around of where his pickup truck was found. While the investigation continued, deputies found evidence far outside the search area that led them to request help from search dogs.
Hoffman says it’s likely Baumann’s body wouldn’t have been found without help from the search dog team.
