Bob Stitt has been named the new head football coach at the University of Montana, Director of Athletics Kent Haslam announced Tuesday.

Stitt, 50, has served as the head coach at the Division II Colorado School of Mines the past 15 seasons. He compiled an overall record of 108-62 and a conference mark of 83-44. His 2014 Orediggers went 10-2 and qualified for the NCAA Division II football playoffs.

Stitt makes the jump to the Division I FCS and replaces Mick Delaney, who retired after three seasons last month with a career record of 24-14.

Montana was 9-5 overall in 2014, received an at-large berth into the NCAA FCS playoffs and advanced to the second round, losing 37-20 on the road to fourth-ranked Eastern Washington. The Griz tied for second in the Big Sky Conference with a record of 6-2 in the regular season.

Stitt will be formally introduced at a press conference on Friday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. in the Canyon Club on the eastside of Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Stitt is a 1987 graduate of Doane College, where he was a running back from 1982-86.

Stitt was an offensive coordinator at Harvard before taking the coaching job in Colorado.

He previously was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for four years at Doane and assistant head coach and offensive and special teams coordinator at Austin College in Texas.

His hiring is pending approval from Montana’s Board of Regents.
