BILLINGS — Billings West football coach Paul Klaboe is retiring after 29 seasons, 210 wins and three Class AA state championships.

Klaboe also announced Monday he is retiring as an American History teacher at the end of the school year. He’s spent 35 years with the Billings school district and was an assistant football coach for six seasons before being named head coach.

Klaboe’s teams posted a 210-102 record, won state titles in 1997, 1998 and 2005 and were runners-up five times, most recently in 2011. All four of his sons played football for him. His youngest, Casey, a senior, was the Bears’ quarterback this season.

Klaboe says he enjoyed instilling confidence in his players, including convincing running back John Edwards that he could play quarterback. Edwards led the Bears to the 1997 state title and helped the Montana Grizzlies win the 2001 national championship.
