HAVRE — Former Montana State-Northern football coach Mark Samson has been named head coach of the Havre High Blue Ponies.

Havre High athletic director Dennis Murphy tells the Havre Daily News the hiring must be approved by the school board.

Samson takes over for Jason Christensen, who resigned in December after six seasons.

Samson coached at Northern for 10 seasons before resigning in August 2014 after being placed on administrative leave. University system officials said he deposited $3,000 in football camp revenue into his personal checking account and paid camp employees without withholding payroll taxes.

Samson coached at Helena Capital from 1997-2003, winning Class AA state titles in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

Murphy says Samson missed coaching and Havre High is lucky to get someone with so much experience and football knowledge. Samson also recently took a teaching position at Havre High.
