HELENA — The state Board of Livestock has appointed a new executive officer of the Department of Livestock.

Mike Honeycutt was appointed Tuesday to administer, protect, promote and regulate the state’s livestock industry.

He most recently served as managing director of the National Council for Agricultural Education. The Indiana-based organization promotes high school, college and adult agricultural education across the country.

The North Carolina native has a master’s degree in agricultural and extension education. He was a local agricultural teacher and FFA adviser for five years before serving for nine years on the staff of the national Future Farmers of America.

Former executive officer Christian Mackay resigned in September. At the time, budget shortfalls had led to job cuts and furloughs while an earlier audit found agency expenses weren’t being recorded properly.
