Annie Hill and Jake Perrin are already in peak form as the spring track season begins.
Hill, a sophomore distance runner at Glacier High School, ran what is believed to be the fastest 3,200-meter race by a female prep athlete from Montana.
Hill ran a personal-best 10:14.14 at the Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles last weekend. Competing in the elite national competition, Hill placed second behind Rylee Bowen, a sophomore from Sonoma Academy in California, who won in 10:13.20.
Hill’s remarkable time is 17 seconds faster than her state-championship winning time from last spring.
The all-class state record is 10:26.18, set by Flathead’s Zoe Nelson in 2004.
Hill’s mark surpasses what was thought to be the previous best 3200-meter time by a female high school runner from Montana. Makena Morley of Bigfork ran 10:16.38 at Arcadia in 2014. Nelson ran 10:20.0 at Arcadia in 2004.
Perrin, a senior at Flathead, placed 17th in the 3,200 at Arcadia, clocking 9:02.49. His time was the third fastest by a Montana distance runner behind his brother, Zach, who ran 8:55.24 in 2012, and Missoula’s Adam Peterman, who clocked 8:57.
The all-class state record is 9:12.38, set by Peterman in 2013.
Perrin placed second in the state 3200 in Kalispell last spring in 9:30.67. Marshall Beatty of Missoula Sentinel won in 9:22.92.
Kevin Clary of Flathead ran 9:07.58 at Arcadia in 2000.
