The public is invited to a meeting tonight about the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.

The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail Advisory Council and the U.S. Forest Service is hosting the meeting of the Montana Geographic Subcommittee. The event is Thursday night at the Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s office in Kalispell.

The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail (PNNST) begins at Glacier National Park and winds its way through the high reaches of the most northern and scenic aspects of Montana, Idaho and Washington states to the Pacific Ocean. The PNNST’s 1,200 miles supplies multi-use recreation including hiking, biking and horseback riding for day users, overnighters and thru hikers.

In 2009, Congress designated the PNT as a National Scenic Trail, becoming one of just 11 National Scenic Trails. In August 2015, the Forest Service established the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail Advisory Council bringing together a group of diverse stakeholders to help inform the future of the trail.

The Advisory Council will make recommendations on the administration and management of the PNNST that will inform the Comprehensive Management plan.

Members of the public are invited to provide input on the plan. The advisory council is hosting this meeting to inform the public about the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail and to request information and ideas from the community about the location and management of the trail through Northwest Montana.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. with presentations from the Forest Service, the Pacific Northwest Trail Association, and the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail Advisory Council’s Montana Geographic Subcommittee. The presentation will conclude at 5 p.m.

The Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office is located at 650 Wolfpack Way, Kalispell MT 59901.

Information about the process can be found on the Forest Service’s website.
