The Flathead Valley has a known tradition of excellence in track and field. That legacy is carrying on this spring as a pair of local athletes rank nationally in their respective events.

Glacier sophomore Annie Hill ranks third in the nation in the 1600-meter race. The distance-running sensation squared off against all-class state record holder Christina Aragon last weekend in Great Falls for an historic race. Aragon won in 4:43.58 and Hill narrowly placed second in 4:44.67.

Both times would surpass the all-class state record of 4:46.34, which Aragon set last spring in Kalispell at the state meet. State records can only be set at state meets.

The two times in Great Falls were the fastest in history in Montana for female high school runners. Aragon previously ran 4:37.91 in New York.

The two girls’ times also rank second and third, respectively, in the nation.

Hill also ranks third in the nation for the 3200-meter race with 10:14.14, which she ran in Los Angeles at Arcadia.

Hill and Aragon will meet again in an exciting rematch at the Class AA state meet in Missoula, May 26-28.

Luke May, the two-time Class A state champion javelin thrower from Whitefish, is ranked third in the nation among all prep athletes.

The standout senior’s top throw this spring is 205-feet, 4 inches, which he achieved at the Columbia Falls Iceberg Invite on April 23.

May’s mark is barely behind No. 2 ranked Logan Wolfley of Silver Lake, Kansas, 208-6.76. Trenton Allen of Derby, Kansas leads the nation with 221-3.12.

Glasgow’s Benji Phillips ranked 10th in the nation in javelin with a throw of 196-3.

May is pursuing a third state title this spring before taking his talents to the University of Minnesota, where he will compete in track and field.
