Flathead Wrestlers Win in Great Falls

Ten Flathead wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and four emerged as champions

The Flathead grapplers brought home another team championship along with several individual honors from the Great Falls C.M. Russell Holiday Classic last weekend.

The team finished with a two-day total of 264.5 points. Colstrip was second with 178.5 points and Great Falls was third with 175.

Ten Flathead wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and four emerged as champions. Hunter Rush won the 103-pound title, Bryce Shaffer won the 113-pound weight class, Hunter Wellcome won at 182 pounds, and Matt Gash Gilder was victorious at 205 pounds. Payton Hume placed second in the 152-pound division and Tucker Nadau was second in the 170-pound class. Garrett Reike placed third at 160 pounds and Tanner Russell was fourth at 120 pounds.

Columbia Falls had three grapplers finish in third place: Winfield West at 120 pounds, Ben Windauer at 145 pounds and Colten McPhee at 160 pounds.

Justin Gibson led Glacier with a third-place finish at 138 pounds.

Eureka shined at its home Buzz Lucey Invitational wrestling tournament. There were six individual champs for the hometown team — Hank Dunn at 126 pounds, Jonathan Schmidt at 145 pounds, Cannan Smith at 152 pounds, Garrett Graves at 182 pounds and Joe Fehr at 205 pounds. The Lions won the team title with 222.5 points. Flathead’s JV squad took second with 188.5 points. Bigfork’s Matt Farrier won the 170-pound division.
