Ryggs Johnston has a commanding lead at the Class B high school state golf tournament in Shelby as the final round resumes on Thursday.

The sophomore at Libby High School shot an 11-under 61 at Marias Valley Golf and Country Club in Shelby on Tuesday. The tournament was postponed Wednesday due to weather but resumed Thursday morning for the final round.

Colton Hudson of Huntley Project is in second place after shooting a 69 in the first round, followed by Bucky Crippen of Missoula Loyola, 71, and Peter Brown of Colstrip, 73.

Bigfork’s Colton Stodghill and Augie Emslie both shot an 83 in the first round and are vying for all-state honors.

Bigfork’s Isabella Santistevan shot an 88 in the first round and is tied for sixth on the girls side.

Johnston is the defending state champ in Class B. A year ago, he shattered the all-class state record by five strokes. He finished with a 68-63 — 131 on the Johnny Walker Course at Pryor Creek Golf Club in Huntley.

Last fall he committed to play at Arizona State University after graduating.

Last summer, he tied for fifth overall at the Junior America’s Cup in Mexico against many of the top amateur golfers in North America. He was the fourth-best golfer from the U.S. and finished only three strokes out of second place and five out of first.
