Greg Gianforte has won the Montana Congressional race, the Associated Press announced.

Gianforte, a Republican from Bozeman, will become Montana’s next lone member in the U.S. House of Representatives after defeating Democrat Rob Quist on Thursday. The Associated Press called the race in Gianforte’s favor at 10:30 p.m.

Statewide polls closed at 8 p.m. in the bitterly contested special election for Montana’s sole House seat — a race that was rocked with controversy last night when Gianforte was charged with assaulting a reporter.

The Flathead Beacon is posting live results.

The candidates are Gianforte, a wealthy Republican businessman from Bozeman, and Quist, a Creston musician. The Beacon profiled the candidates here.

Here’s a link to the latest on the misdemeanor assault allegations.

And here’s the response of Montana’s top elected leaders to news that Gianforte allegedly “body slammed” a national reporter at a campaign event in Bozeman on May 24, the eve of the election.
