Happy Friday, Beacon readers! There’s a new “I” in town bringing you your end-of-week Daily Roundup. Lauren Frick here, and I’m helping send you into the weekend just as I wrap up my first week at the Beacon.
I’m a native Ohioan, but I’ve made my way to the Flathead Valley by way of a 2,100-mile trek from the South, most recently covering just about everything under the sun in Galveston County at Texas’ Oldest Newspaper (1842 to be exact).
Here at the Beacon, I’ll be covering the north valley — I’m looking at you Whitefish and Columbia Falls readers — in addition to arts, entertainment, and sports. I’ve already been fortunate enough to start milling around Whitefish City Hall (you can read about that down below), and I’ll be covering the Class AA high school state championship football game tonight.
While I’m enjoying a crisp 34-degree evening under the dark Montana sky, visions of sugar plum fairies in a warm theater can start dancing in your head.
The Northwest Ballet Company over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend will present its 37th production of the “Nutcracker” at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts.
You can catch performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30.
The roughly 50-member cast, which has been preparing weekly since September, features dancers from throughout the valley.
“The growth from September to November always astounds me and I’m so grateful for the supportive community who faithfully comes to Christmas-decked-out-Bigfork for our performances each season,” Marisa Roth, director of the Northwest Ballet Company in Kalispell, said in a press release. “We aim to always have something different and special for them as they do.”
Marygrace Knuffke, a senior at Glacier High School and Northwest Ballet Company principal dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, described the lead-up to the show as “bittersweet.”
“These moments leading up to the show are bittersweet, but I know once the shows come, I’ll be able to live it up,” Knuffke said. “It’s crazy to think that I’m one of the big girls now and I get to leave my legacy.”
Reserved tickets for the event are available online atwww.northwestballet.com or on the Northwest Ballet Company ‘s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NWB.Co. A “Sugar Plum Fairy Parade” will follow the 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors (age 65 and older), and $17 for children (age 12 and under).
